The skull is one of the most recognisable forms in human visual culture.
It appears in anatomy.
In archaeology.
In painting.
In sculpture.
In ritual objects.
In scientific collections.
In memorial traditions.
In fashion, design and contemporary art.
It can signal mortality.
Knowledge.
Identity.
Danger.
Memory.
Transformation.
Or simply the structure that remains beneath the face.

Look at it without symbolism for a moment.

Over-carved teeth can become visually noisy.
Under-defined teeth can flatten the lower face.
A strong treatment does not require absolute anatomical realism.

The cavity will not occur in precisely the same place again.
SYMMETRY IS A FRAMEWORK, NOT A REQUIREMENT
Human skull anatomy is broadly bilateral.
That gives the form a natural expectation of symmetry.

One side may be darker.
One eye socket may intersect a pale mineral band.
One temple may contain a cavity.
The other may remain polished.

Too much repetition becomes monotonous.
Too much difference can make comparison difficult.

The recognised form creates continuity.
Material creates variation.

Material selection matters.
The decision to carve a skull should begin with the stone.
Is there enough volume?
Will important mineral features survive?
Can the natural structure interact meaningfully with the form?
Will carving reveal something?
Or merely remove what made the material interesting?
Restraint begins before carving starts.
THE BEST RESULT PRESERVES BOTH IDENTITIES
A successful natural-stone skull should still be recognisable as a skull.
It should also remain recognisable as stone.
If anatomy dominates completely, the material becomes only a medium.
If geological irregularity dominates completely, the sculptural form may disappear.
The most compelling pieces hold both identities simultaneously.

The silhouette.
Then you recognise the stone.
The banding.
The crystal.
The inclusion.
The translucency.
Neither erases the other.
WHY THE FORM PERSISTS
